CHAPTER 15: Blake’s Confession

Blake Harlow did not intend to confess. He intended to sit beside his mother, look injured, and let adults build a shield around him.
But fear makes children careless, even cruel children.
When Dr. Warren asked him to describe what happened, Blake repeated the same line: Ethan attacked him. Ethan threw him. Ethan humiliated him in front of everyone.
Then Hannah’s mother asked if the board had seen the earlier cafeteria footage.
Blake’s head snapped up.
“What cafeteria footage?” Gregory demanded.
A technology staff member connected another file to the screen. It came from a security camera above the cafeteria entrance two weeks earlier. There was no sound, but the images were clear. Blake knocked Ethan’s tray from his hands. Ethan bent to clean it. Blake laughed and stepped on Ethan’s notebook.
Another clip showed the hallway note.
Another showed Blake blocking Ethan at his locker.
Blake’s face turned red. “Everybody does stuff like that.”
There it was.
Not denial.
Normalization.
The room went still.
Claire closed her eyes for one second.
Ethan stared at the table.
Gregory whispered, “Stop talking.”
But Blake was too angry to understand the danger. “He acts like he’s better than everyone. He never says anything. He just looks at you.”
Dr. Warren leaned forward. “So you targeted him because he was quiet?”
Blake’s mouth opened, then closed.
His mother touched his sleeve. “Blake.”
But the confession had already escaped. Not in one clean sentence, but in the shape of his excuses. He did not think he had done nothing. He thought what he had done should not count.
Ethan lifted his head slowly.
For months, he had wondered what flaw in him invited cruelty.
Now he understood.
May you like
The flaw had never been his.
It had been the room around him.
