CHAPTER 1: The Gym Went Silent

Blake Harlow returned to school three months later, but not to the same kingdom.

He was smaller somehow, though his body had not changed. His friends had learned the danger of standing too close to a falling crown. Some avoided him. Some blamed him. Some only missed the protection his name had given them.

Gregory Harlow’s company lost its district development contract after investigators uncovered improper pressure on school officials. Principal Whitaker resigned before the final report was released. The board adopted outside oversight for bullying cases, and every complaint now required parent confirmation before being marked resolved.

None of it erased what had happened.

Ethan knew that.

He still flinched when someone moved too quickly behind him. He still checked his locker before opening it. He still heard the crowd laughing in dreams sometimes.

But he also began helping Coach Ramirez with a new after-school safety club. Not fighting. Not revenge. Falling safely. Escaping grips. Speaking early. Recording facts. Standing with others before the mat became the only place left.

On the first day, six students came.

By the third week, there were twenty-two.

Hannah designed flyers. Claire brought snacks when she could. James visited once and watched Ethan teach a younger boy how to step back from a wrist grab.

“Control matters more than power,” Ethan said.

The words came out in his father’s voice.

James looked away for a moment.

Later, as they folded mats, Blake appeared at the gym door. He did not enter. He stood there with his hands in his hoodie pocket, face unreadable.

Ethan saw him.

For a second, the old fear rose.

Then it passed.

Blake looked at the mat, then at Ethan.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.

Ethan did not answer right away.
