CHAPTER 6: The Sound After the Fall

Silence has weight. Ethan felt it pressing against his chest as he stood over Blake, hands open, heart hammering so hard he thought everyone could hear it.
Blake rolled onto his side, groaning. He was not badly hurt; the mat had done what mats were made to do. But his pride had landed harder than his body. His teammates stepped forward, then stopped. None of them knew how to rush in when their leader was the one on the ground.
Hannah’s phone kept recording.
The principal, Mr. Whitaker, finally found his voice. “Everyone stay calm.”
It was a strange thing to say after he had stayed calm through the shoving, the insults, and the public setup. Ethan noticed that. So did Hannah. So did a few others whose faces changed as the truth became impossible to ignore.
Blake pushed himself up on one elbow. “He attacked me!”
The words came fast, practiced, almost automatic.
Ethan shook his head. “No. You grabbed me.”
“He threw me!” Blake shouted.
“You ran at him,” someone whispered from the crowd.
Blake’s head snapped toward the voice. The student disappeared behind two others.
Coach Ramirez knelt beside Blake and checked his shoulder, his neck, his breathing. “You can move?”
Blake shoved his hand away. “Call my dad.”
That sentence changed the room again.
Students looked toward the principal. Mr. Whitaker’s face tightened. Everyone in town knew what calling Gregory Harlow meant. It meant lawyers, threats, angry board meetings, and a sudden rearrangement of facts until the Harlow family came out spotless.
Ethan took one step back, then another.
He had followed the rules.
He had not started it.
He had stopped when the danger stopped.
But the fear creeping through him now was not about Blake. It was about adults who could turn truth into paperwork and paperwork into punishment.
At the far wall, the gym doors opened.
A tall man in a dark jacket stepped inside.
Ethan did not see him at first.
May you like
But Claire Miller did.
And her hand flew to her mouth.
