CHAPTER 16: The Suspension That Changed Sides
Dr. Warren announced the first decision before midnight.
Ethan Miller would not be suspended.
The statement was plain, but Claire covered her mouth as if it were a miracle. Ethan blinked at the table, not fully understanding what it meant to walk away from a disaster without being blamed for surviving it.
Blake Harlow would be removed from school pending a full disciplinary hearing. His participation in athletics would be suspended. The bullying complaints would be reopened. Principal Whitaker would be placed on administrative leave while the district investigated record falsification.
Gregory stood. “You are making a mistake.”
Dr. Warren looked tired, but not afraid. “No. We are correcting one.”
“You know what my family has done for this district.”
“I do,” she said. “And that is part of what must be reviewed.”
The words landed harder than any shout.
Gregory’s donations, favors, and influence had always operated in shadows polite people refused to name. Now those shadows had been pulled under fluorescent boardroom lights.
Blake’s mother began to cry quietly. Not for Ethan. Not for Claire. Maybe not even for Blake. She cried because the world she trusted to bend had suddenly held firm.
Outside the boardroom, Ethan sat on a bench while adults signed papers and made calls. Hannah joined him, her red phone now dark in her hand.
“I’m sorry I didn’t say something sooner,” she said.
Ethan looked at her. “You said it when it mattered.”
She nodded, eyes wet.
Coach Ramirez came out next. “Ethan.”
Ethan stiffened.
The coach crouched so they were eye level. “I failed you today. I’m sorry.”
Adults had apologized to Ethan before, but usually in ways that protected themselves. This one sounded different.
Ethan nodded once.
