CHAPTER 17: The Morning After

The next morning, Westbrook Middle did not know how to behave.
Students whispered when Ethan walked through the front doors. Some looked ashamed. Some looked impressed. A few looked disappointed that the video had not become a meme they could laugh at without consequence.
Ethan hated every stare.
He wore the same gray hoodie because changing clothes felt like admitting the old him had disappeared overnight. He did not want to become a symbol. He wanted to get through math, eat lunch without losing his tray, and go home to watch television with his mother.
But the school had changed, even if only slightly.
The note that had been taped to his locker was gone. Someone had cleaned the tape residue. On the floor below the locker sat a folded sheet of notebook paper.
Ethan hesitated before picking it up.
It said: I saw what happened. I’m sorry I laughed before. You didn’t deserve it.
No name.
He folded it and placed it inside his backpack.
At lunch, Hannah sat across from him without asking permission. Two other students joined. Then one more. No one made a speech. No one asked him to relive the fall. They just sat there, creating a small wall of normal around him.
Across the cafeteria, Blake’s usual table was empty.
Ethan did not feel joy about that.
He felt space.
Space to breathe. Space to eat. Space to be more than the boy everyone waited to see break.
Near the cafeteria entrance, a temporary staff member adjusted a security camera. In the hallway, a poster appeared with a hotline for reporting bullying. It was not enough. Posters never were.
But Claire had taught Ethan that change often began as paper.
A form.
A folder.

A note.
A video no one managed to delete.
