CHAPTER 9: The Video Everyone Wanted Deleted

They moved the students back to the bleachers, but the gym did not return to normal. Normal had cracked open. Whispers traveled faster than teachers could stop them.
Hannah stood beside Claire and James, holding her phone like evidence in a trial. Coach Ramirez watched over Ethan, who sat on the edge of the mat with his elbows on his knees, trying to slow his breathing.
Blake paced near the nurse with an ice pack he barely needed, already texting with one hand. His father would arrive soon. Everyone knew it.
Mr. Whitaker lowered his voice. “Hannah, I need you to give me that phone.”
“No,” Hannah said.
“I am the principal.”
“My mom pays for it.”
A few students almost smiled, then thought better of it.
Whitaker’s jaw tightened. “You recorded a private school event.”
James stepped closer. “A public assembly in a gym full of students is not a private confession. And if that video shows a student being attacked while staff failed to intervene, deleting it would be a very serious mistake.”
Whitaker’s face reddened. “I did not say anything about deleting it.”
“No,” James said. “You just reached for the only copy.”
Hannah pulled the phone to her chest.
Claire knelt in front of Ethan. “Show me your wrist.”
He hesitated, then turned it over. The skin was red where Blake had grabbed him. Claire’s mouth tightened, but she did not cry. Ethan had seen that look before. It was the look she wore when a bill arrived that she could not pay yet. Fear wrapped in discipline.
“I’m sorry,” Ethan whispered.
Claire shook her head. “You have nothing to apologize for.”
Across the gym, the double doors burst open.
Gregory Harlow entered in a black overcoat, phone pressed to his ear, rage already arranged on his face. Behind him came Blake’s mother and two men in suits who looked less like parents and more like consequences.
May you like
Blake smiled.
The real fight had just arrived.
