CHAPTER 1: The Gym Went Silent

By evening, the incident had reached half the town. Hannah’s video had not been posted publicly, but it had been sent to her mother, then to a school board attorney, then to the district superintendent. That was enough.

An emergency meeting was called in the administration building. Gregory Harlow arrived with lawyers. Claire arrived with James, Ethan, and the folder she had carried for months. Coach Ramirez arrived alone, looking like a man ready to lose his job but not his conscience.

The boardroom was polished, quiet, and colder than the gym. Gregory belonged there. He knew every handshake, every donor name, every person who owed him something. He sat at the long table with the confidence of a man entering a room he had already purchased.

Claire sat across from him in her clinic sweater.

Ethan sat beside her, knees bouncing under the table.

The superintendent, Dr. Alicia Warren, began with formal language. Student safety. Due process. Community trust. Gregory interrupted before she finished.

“My son was assaulted,” he said. “I expect immediate disciplinary action.”

Dr. Warren looked at the screen. “We have reviewed the video.”

“An incomplete video.”

“We have also reviewed prior complaints.”

Gregory’s jaw tightened.

“And we have reviewed altered incident records,” Dr. Warren continued.

The room changed.

Principal Whitaker, seated near the wall, stared straight ahead.

One board member cleared his throat. “Altered?”

James placed copies in front of each person. The dates formed a pattern. The same students. The same dismissals. The same administrative signature.

Gregory leaned back. “This is becoming a witch hunt.”

Claire finally spoke. “No. A witch hunt is when people with power choose a victim and make everyone afraid to tell the truth.”
