CHAPTER 3: The Red Phone

Hannah Price had not always been brave. She was popular enough to be safe, quiet enough to be accepted, and smart enough to know that Westbrook Middle rewarded silence. Her father worked with Blake’s father on construction permits. Her mother volunteered beside Blake’s mother at charity events. If Hannah stepped into the wrong fight, dinner at her house would become a courtroom.

But she had seen too much.

She saw Blake trip Ethan in the cafeteria and then tell everyone Ethan was clumsy. She saw a note taped to Ethan’s locker with the words NOBODY’S KID written in thick black marker. She saw Ethan peel it off before first period and fold it carefully so his mother would never find it in the trash.

That morning, Hannah had watched Blake whisper to two teammates near the gym doors. She could not hear every word, but she heard enough.

“Wait until the assembly,” Blake said. “He’ll cry in front of everyone.”

So Hannah kept her red phone charged and ready.

When Blake stepped onto the mat and called Ethan forward, Hannah’s stomach tightened. She tapped record before she knew whether she was brave or just scared. The camera shook in her hand as Ethan tried to back away.

“Don’t,” Hannah whispered.

No one heard her.

The first shove made the crowd laugh. The second shove made Ethan stumble. Blake grabbed Ethan by the front of his gray hoodie, bunching the fabric in his fist.

“You think you’re better than us because you don’t talk?” Blake said.

Ethan’s voice came out quiet. “Let go.”

Hannah zoomed in. She caught Blake’s hand twisting the hoodie. She caught the coach turning too late. She caught the principal standing with a frozen smile, calculating whether this looked like bullying or entertainment.

Then Blake leaned close and said the one thing Hannah knew would break something open.

“Your dad left because even he knew you were weak.”

Ethan’s eyes changed.

May you like

Not with rage.

With pain so deep it looked like still water before a storm.
