CHAPTER 2: A Cry Behind the Monitors

Nurse Hannah Reed was checking medication orders down the hall when she heard the first sound.

It was not a scream. It was worse. A short, terrified cry that seemed to stop itself halfway, as if the person making it had no strength left to call for help.

Hannah looked up from her tablet.

Room 407.

She had been assigned to Olivia Blackwood that morning. Quiet woman, polite, frightened in the way people become frightened when they have spent too long being told not to cause trouble. Hannah had noticed the bruised emotional silence around her before she noticed anything else.

She moved quickly toward the door.

Inside, Vanessa was already backing away from the bed. Olivia lay on the floor beside it, shaking, tears slipping down her temples. Her hands clutched her stomach with the desperate instinct of a mother trying to protect a child before protecting herself.

“What happened?” Hannah demanded.

Vanessa turned with perfect outrage. “She slipped. I came in and found her like this.”

Hannah did not answer. She knelt beside Olivia, checked her breathing, and pressed the emergency call button on the wall.

Olivia tried to speak, but all that came out was, “My baby…”

“We’re here,” Hannah said firmly. “Stay with me, Mrs. Blackwood.”

Vanessa moved toward the door. “I’ll call her husband.”

“No,” Hannah snapped without looking up. “You’ll stay exactly where you are.”

The command hit the room like a slap. Vanessa froze. For the first time, her confidence cracked.

Within seconds, two nurses and an OB physician rushed in. Olivia was lifted gently, carefully, every movement controlled. A fetal monitor was brought close. Wires were placed. Someone called for ultrasound. Someone else asked for security.

Vanessa watched the chaos she had created and realized something she had not planned for.
