CHAPTER 7: The Door to Security Room B

Security Room B was not impressive.
It had beige walls, three rolling chairs, a stale coffee smell, and a bank of monitors that showed every public corridor in the hospital. To Vanessa, it looked ordinary. To Ethan, it looked like judgment.
The security chief, Marcus Reed, stood beside the main console.
“We pulled the seventh-floor footage,” Marcus said. “Hallway, elevator, door entry, and partial reflection from the medication-room glass. There is no camera inside the patient room, but there are enough angles to establish sequence.”
Vanessa crossed her arms. “This is ridiculous. I was trying to help.”
Dr. Hayes did not sit. “Then the footage will show that.”
Ethan stood at the back of the room, silent.
That silence frightened Vanessa more than shouting would have. Ethan had not accused her since leaving Olivia’s bedside. He had not threatened her. He had simply followed the evidence.
Marcus clicked the first file.
On the screen, Olivia’s door appeared from the hallway camera. Vanessa entered at 9:14 p.m. No nurse accompanied her. No authorization appeared on the visitor log. She had used an old family access card that should have been deactivated months earlier.
Marcus clicked again.
A reflection appeared in the polished glass of a medical cabinet across the hall. Blurry, partial, but clear enough to show movement through the open doorway before it swung mostly shut.
Olivia on the bed.
Vanessa approaching.
A sudden motion.
Olivia falling.
Ethan’s hands slowly closed into fists.
Vanessa laughed once, too sharply. “That proves nothing.”
Marcus did not answer. He zoomed the image, stabilized the frame, and advanced it second by second.
The screen froze.
A black boot lifted toward Olivia’s body.

No one spoke.
The tiny room seemed to lose all air.
