CHAPTER 15: Vanessa Learns the Door Is Locked

Vanessa Cross spent the night in a holding room that smelled faintly of bleach and old coffee.
She had expected rescue.
A lawyer. Her mother. A Blackwood representative. Someone from the family office arriving with paperwork, influence, and the quiet promise that mistakes like hers did not ruin people like her.
No one came.
By morning, her phone had been taken, her access cards deactivated, and every luxury hotel partnership under her name frozen pending review. When her attorney finally arrived, he looked less like a man ready to fight and more like someone delivering bad weather.
“The footage is bad,” he said.
Vanessa stared at him. “It’s unclear.”
“It’s clear enough.”
“She provoked me.”
“She was in a hospital bed.”
Vanessa’s face hardened. “You’re supposed to defend me.”
“I am defending you by telling you to stop talking.”
He placed a printed document on the table. It was a termination notice from Blackwood Holdings.
Vanessa read the first paragraph, then the second, then stopped when she saw Ethan’s signature.
Her throat tightened.
For years, she had believed Ethan’s loyalty could be cornered. She thought history, family pressure, and money would force him to protect her reputation. She had mistaken old connections for love and social power for immunity.
The attorney slid another page forward.
“What is this?” she asked.
“A civil protective order request. Ethan filed it this morning. You are to have no contact with Olivia Blackwood, their child, or any medical staff involved in this case.”
Vanessa laughed, but it sounded thin.
“He’ll calm down.”
The attorney looked at her with pity.
“No,” he said. “He won’t.”

For the first time since entering Room 407, Vanessa understood the door behind her had locked.
And no one on the other side was coming back for her.
