CHAPTER 4: The Woman on the Floor

Olivia looked smaller than Ethan had ever seen her.
She was back in bed, pale against the white pillow, her hair damp at her temples, her hands still resting over her stomach as though someone might try to take the baby from her if she relaxed for even a second.
The sight broke something in him.
Ethan had faced hostile takeovers, public scandals, family betrayal, and enemies who smiled across marble tables. None of it had prepared him for seeing his wife looking at him with apology in her eyes, as if she had somehow failed by being hurt.
He moved to the side of the bed.
“Liv.”
Her lips trembled. “I tried to protect him.”
Him.
They had not announced the baby’s sex yet. It had been their secret, a fragile piece of joy hidden inside weeks of family pressure and Vanessa’s poisonous rumors.
Ethan reached for Olivia’s hand, but he stopped when she flinched.
That tiny movement destroyed him more than any scream could have.
“Did she do this?” he asked.
Olivia looked toward the door. Fear tightened across her face. “She said you’d believe her.”
Ethan’s breathing changed. Slower. Colder.
Olivia forced the words out. “She kicked me, Ethan. I was on the bed, and she kicked me. Then she told me no one would believe a scared pregnant woman over someone your family trusts.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, the man standing beside the bed was no longer only a husband. He was a witness. A protector. A storm that had finally been given a name.
“I believe you,” he said.
Olivia broke then, silently, one hand covering her face.
Ethan leaned close and pressed his forehead against her knuckles.
“No one touches you again,” he whispered. “Not in this hospital. Not in this family. Not anywhere.”
May you like
Outside the room, Vanessa was still pretending to cry.
Inside, Ethan was done pretending anything.
