CHAPTER 18: The Press Conference Ethan Refused to Hide

The Blackwood communications team prepared a statement full of polished phrases.

Private medical incident.

Family matter.

No further comment.

Respect for all involved.

Ethan read it once and dropped it on the conference table.

“No.”

The head of communications looked exhausted. “Mr. Blackwood, silence protects the company.”

“Silence protected the wrong people.”

So at 4:00 p.m., Ethan stood outside Saint Aurelia Medical Center in front of a dozen cameras. He wore no tie. His face was pale from three sleepless nights. Beside him stood Dr. Malcolm Hayes, not as a corporate prop, but as Olivia’s uncle and physician advocate.

Ethan did not give names beyond what police records would already show. He did not reveal Olivia’s private medical details. He did not turn her trauma into spectacle.

But he told the truth.

“My pregnant wife was harmed inside a hospital room by someone who believed wealth and family connections would protect her from accountability,” he said. “She was wrong.”

The cameras clicked.

Ethan continued. “My wife is recovering. Our son is stable. We ask for privacy for them. But I will not call violence a misunderstanding, and I will not call intimidation a family matter.”

Behind the cameras, Margaret watched from a parked car, crying quietly.

At the hospital window above, Olivia did not watch the press conference live. She did not need to. Hannah sat beside her and read the statement afterward, word for word.

When Hannah finished, Olivia closed her eyes.

For years, people had spoken about her.

Around her.

Over her.

That day, Ethan spoke for her without stealing her voice.

And somehow, that made her feel less alone.
