CHAPTER 11: Olivia Hears the Truth

Olivia woke after midnight to the sound of Ethan’s voice.

He was not on the phone. He was sitting beside her bed, reading quietly from a printed page while she slept. It took her a few seconds to understand he was reading the doctor’s notes, as if learning every detail might help him undo what had happened.

Her hand moved.

Ethan looked up instantly. “Liv?”

“The baby?” she whispered.

“Stable,” he said. His voice broke on the word. “The doctor says he’s strong.”

Tears gathered in Olivia’s eyes again, but this time they were not only fear.

Ethan took her hand carefully. “Vanessa was arrested.”

Olivia closed her eyes. A shaking breath left her body. “She said you’d believe her.”

“I saw the footage.”

Her eyes opened.

He told her everything — not all at once, not with anger, but gently. He told her about the security room, the boot on the screen, the divorce papers, the emergency board call, and the moment Dr. Hayes announced in front of everyone that Olivia was his niece.

At that, Olivia looked away.

“I didn’t want people to think I married you because of Uncle Malcolm,” she whispered.

Ethan stared at her.

All this time, she had hidden the one connection that could have protected her because she wanted their marriage to be judged by love, not advantage. She had walked into his world without armor because she believed honesty should be enough.

“I should have protected you sooner,” Ethan said.

Olivia shook her head weakly. “I didn’t tell you how bad it got.”

“I should have noticed.”

Outside, rain hit the hospital windows.

Inside, Ethan placed his hand gently beside hers over her stomach.

A small movement answered them.

May you like

Their son kicked once, strong and alive.

Olivia began to cry, and this time Ethan cried with her.
