CHAPTER 14: The Statement Olivia Chose

The police returned at noon to take Olivia’s statement.

Ethan wanted to refuse. He wanted to shield her from every question, every memory, every official word that would force her to relive the moment Vanessa’s boot rose over her. But Dr. Ortiz gently reminded him that Olivia’s voice mattered.

So he sat beside her, silent, while Olivia spoke.

She described Vanessa entering the room. The insults. The threat. The kick. The fall. The pressure to stay quiet. She did not exaggerate. She did not dramatize. That made it worse.

The officer taking notes paused twice, not because he doubted her, but because anger kept tightening his hand around the pen.

When she finished, Olivia asked for water.

Ethan helped her drink.

The officer closed his notebook. “Mrs. Blackwood, do you wish to press charges?”

Before Ethan could speak, Olivia answered.

“Yes.”

Her voice was soft, but the room changed around it.

Vanessa had built the night on the assumption that Olivia would be too afraid, too ashamed, too alone to stand against her. But Olivia was not on the floor anymore. She was in a hospital bed, yes. She was weak, yes. She was frightened, yes.

And she was still choosing truth.

Ethan looked at her with something deeper than love. Respect, sharpened by guilt.

After the officers left, Olivia leaned back, exhausted.

“I don’t want our son to grow up in a family where cruelty is protected because it wears expensive clothes,” she said.

Ethan took her hand.

“He won’t.”

“Promise me.”

“I promise.”

She searched his face. “Not just Vanessa. All of it. The whispers. The dinners. Your mother’s little comments. The way people look at me like I was borrowed.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

May you like

“Then it ends with us,” he said.

And for once, Olivia believed him.
