CHAPTER 16: The Hearing in the Glass Room

Two days later, Olivia attended the emergency family trust hearing by video from her hospital bed.

The boardroom on the screen was made of glass, walnut, and old money. Ethan sat at the head of the table. Margaret sat to his right, smaller than usual, her pearls suddenly unable to protect her from consequence. Dr. Hayes sat beside Olivia in the hospital room, just outside the camera’s center, close enough that everyone knew she was not alone.

The trust attorney cleared his throat.

“The matter before the board concerns Vanessa Cross’s removal from all affiliated holdings, the suspension of the Cross family partnership, and the establishment of independent protections for Mrs. Olivia Blackwood and the unborn Blackwood heir.”

Olivia hated that last phrase.

Unborn heir.

Not baby. Not son. Not child.

Heir.

Ethan noticed her face change.

“Say his name,” he told the attorney.

The room stilled.

The attorney blinked. “Pardon?”

“My son is not a leverage point,” Ethan said. “His name is Noah.”

Olivia looked at him through the small screen, tears rising unexpectedly.

Ethan continued. “And my wife’s safety is not a board matter to negotiate. It is a line. Anyone who crossed it is out.”

A director coughed. “Ethan, the Cross family controls several hotel permits we need for the Westbridge project.”

“Then we lose the project.”

Margaret finally looked up. “You would sacrifice nine figures?”

Ethan turned to her. “For Olivia and Noah? Without blinking.”

No one spoke after that.

The vote was unanimous.

Vanessa was removed. The Cross partnership was suspended. An independent review opened into every person who had used family influence to isolate Olivia.

From her hospital bed, Olivia watched the empire that once judged her finally rearrange itself around her safety.

She did not smile.

But she breathed easier.
