Serena’s Second File

Chapter 11 - Serena’s Second File

Lydia entered a formal cooperation agreement.

She surrendered her medical license, pleaded guilty to record falsification, and agreed to identify every Orion patient. In return, prosecutors would consider her assistance during sentencing.

She asked Elena to call her by her middle name, Serena.

“Lydia Cross was the doctor Adrian built,” she said. “Serena was who I was before him.”

Elena refused the symbolic escape.

“A new name does not create a new past.”

Serena accepted that.

Her second file was hidden in a safety-deposit box. It contained letters Daniel sent her during Orion’s early development. He knew she was uncomfortable with the trial and begged her to help stop Adrian.

One letter said Adrian had begun testing the device on himself.

Not for pain.

For obedience.

The system could deliver tiny doses that reduced panic and resistance without leaving a person unconscious. Adrian imagined military, prison, and psychiatric markets.

Daniel called it chemical restraint disguised as responsive medicine.

Serena also revealed Adrian recorded private conversations with board members and physicians. He used evidence of affairs, tax violations, and prescription misuse to force compliance.

The hidden recordings explained why directors remained loyal after his removal.

Brooks obtained a warrant for Adrian’s lake house.

The recording server was gone.

In the basement, agents found a wall marked with outlines where equipment had recently stood. A paper shredder contained fragments of patient names. One fragment read SOPHIE BELL — RESPONSE ARCHIVE.

Sophie had received an anonymous message that morning asking her to meet a journalist.

Elena called her foster family.

Sophie was missing.

The search led to Saint Arden Behavioral Center, the same residential facility that held her after the Orion reaction years earlier. Adrian had purchased the center through a shell company two months earlier.

He intended to discredit the trial’s most powerful witness by recommitting her.

A physician at Saint Arden signed an emergency hold based on claims Sophie threatened herself. The statement came from a caller pretending to be her foster mother.

Brooks arrived with a court order.

Staff refused entry.

Then Elena noticed a small boy at an upstairs window.

His arm was covered in a white cast.

Another child appeared beside him.

Then another.

Saint Arden was not only holding Sophie.

It had become Orion’s replacement clinic.
