The Woman in the Laundry Room

Chapter 08 - The Woman in the Laundry Room

Alma Ruiz disappeared before her second police interview.

Her apartment was empty. Her phone remained on the kitchen table. Adrian’s lawyers suggested she fled after stealing jewelry from the mansion.

Elena knew Alma did not wear earrings because her youngest daughter pulled at them as a baby. The accusation was written by someone who had never looked at her.

A laundry-delivery driver remembered seeing Alma enter a Northbridge van outside the estate. She appeared frightened but not physically forced. The van’s GPS had been disabled.

Mateo remembered a place Alma once called “the house under the hospital.”

Beneath Lydia’s clinic sat an old rehabilitation wing connected by a service tunnel. Police found the entrance sealed behind industrial washers.

Alma was inside.

She had gone there voluntarily after Adrian threatened to report her daughter’s immigration status unless she recovered Daniel’s Orion key. Once she entered, security locked the tunnel.

Officers also found three former Northbridge nurses living in small staff rooms. Adrian had paid them through confidential settlements and required them to remain available for legal preparation.

They were not prisoners in the legal sense.

They were women whose housing, healthcare, and immigration sponsorship depended on silence.

Alma gave Brooks a notebook she had kept inside detergent boxes for years. It documented every time Lydia entered Mateo’s room, every medication Adrian ordered without Elena, and every package removed from Daniel’s office.

One entry changed the murder investigation.

On the night Daniel died, Adrian returned to the mansion at 3:40 a.m. smelling of smoke. He gave Alma a jacket to wash and told her never to mention it.

Inside the pocket, she found a melted Northbridge access badge.

She hid it rather than destroy it.

The badge belonged to Warehouse Three—the building where Daniel died.

Officially, Adrian was speaking at a conference two hundred miles away when the explosion occurred.

His attendance video had been prerecorded.

Federal agents reopened Daniel’s death.

Forensic investigators examined preserved debris and found the explosion began near a gas line manually opened from a secured control panel. Adrian’s badge accessed the panel forty minutes before ignition.

The evidence did not yet prove he opened it.

It proved he lied about being there.

Adrian sent Elena a private message.

YOU ARE DESTROYING THE COMPANY DANIEL BUILT.

May you like

She answered once.

NO. I AM DISCOVERING WHAT YOU BUILT INSIDE IT.
