The Board Sees the Video

Chapter 14 - The Board Sees the Video
The kidnapping attempt failed.
The guard surrendered after hospital security blocked the elevator. His phone contained instructions from Adrian and a photograph of Mateo’s room taken minutes earlier.
Adrian was close.
Federal agents traced a payment to an apartment across from Northbridge headquarters. They found surveillance equipment, disguises, and a live feed of the hospital entrance.
Adrian had already left.
Elena decided hiding would continue to give him control.
She called an emergency meeting of Northbridge’s creditors, employees, patient families, and remaining shareholders. The gathering took place in the company’s manufacturing hall rather than the executive boardroom.
Daniel attended by secure video from his hospital bed.
For the first time, the co-founder the world believed dead appeared before the company.
He spoke slowly.
“Northbridge was built to reduce pain. Adrian learned pain could also reduce resistance.”
The full Orion footage played.
No edited clips. No dramatic music. Only children, charts, hidden reservoirs, and executives discussing compliance as though fear were a defective metric.
Employees watched in silence.
Then Mateo’s office video appeared.
Adrian’s voice said, “Make the accident useful.”
The machinist Paul Reed stood and removed his Northbridge badge.
Others followed.
Elena stopped them.
“Leaving may protect your conscience,” she said. “Staying long enough to rebuild may protect the next child.”
She proposed converting Northbridge into a public-benefit corporation. Daniel’s and Mateo’s controlling shares would enter a protected trust. Patient representatives and employees would hold board seats. No executive could control clinical data or guardianship decisions.
The vote passed among independent shareholders and creditors.
Adrian’s remaining proxies were invalidated by the fraud investigation.
At the end of the meeting, every screen suddenly changed.
Adrian appeared live from an unknown room.
He looked tired, unshaven, and furious.
“You are applauding thieves,” he said. “Daniel stole my life’s work. Elena stole my family. Mateo stole a future he cannot understand.”
Mateo stepped toward the camera.
“I did not steal anything.”
Adrian’s expression softened in a way more frightening than anger.
“You are confused, son.”
Mateo raised his bandaged arm.
“No. That was the medicine.”
The feed cut off.
Technicians captured enough network data to locate the transmission.

It came from the Cross estate.
Adrian had returned to the house where the story began.
