Chapter 04 - The Trust in Mateo’s Name
The Marlowe Trust was written with the kind of precision Daniel brought to engineering.
Mateo’s shares could not be sold, pledged, or diluted before his twenty-fifth birthday. A temporary guardian could vote them only to protect the company. If Mateo became permanently incapable, however, the shares transferred into a medical stewardship fund managed by Northbridge’s chief executive.
Adrian had helped draft that clause.
At the time, Daniel believed it protected his son from predatory relatives.
After Daniel’s death, Adrian became chief executive.
The court hearing began at nine under emergency secrecy. Adrian appeared remotely from his attorney’s office, dressed in a navy suit and wearing the weary expression of a father forced to make painful decisions.
He claimed Elena had stopped taking prescribed medication, kidnapped Mateo from approved medical care, and cut open a medically necessary cast during a paranoid episode.
Lydia testified that Mateo suffered behavioral regression and delusions.
Then Elena’s attorney, Gabriel Soto, placed the prototype infusion device before the judge.
Dr. Shah explained the toxicology results. Detective Brooks submitted the recovered office video. The judge watched Adrian say, “Make the accident useful.”
For the first time, his expression failed.
His attorney argued the recording was incomplete and illegally obtained.
“It was recorded in the child’s own home by equipment installed by his deceased father,” Gabriel said. “The only unlawful act visible is what happened after the child ran.”
The judge suspended Adrian’s guardianship authority, barred Lydia from treating Mateo, and placed the trust under independent control.
It should have felt like victory.
Instead, Gabriel warned Elena that the order was temporary.
Adrian controlled Northbridge’s legal department, board, hospital contracts, and public-relations network. By noon, news sites described Elena as an unstable widow exploiting her injured son in a corporate dispute.
A photograph appeared of her cutting Mateo’s cast. Cropped tightly, it looked violent.
The caption called her “the mother with scissors.”
Elena almost shut down.
Then Mateo woke and asked whether people believed him.
She sat beside his bed.
“Some do.”
“And the others?”
“They have not seen everything yet.”
He looked at his bandaged arm.
“Dad said truth is like a bridge. It only works if both sides hold.”
Daniel used to say structures failed where force was hidden.
Elena took Mateo’s uninjured hand.
“We will build the other side.”
The brass Orion key opened no door at the mansion or Northbridge headquarters.
A retired Northbridge engineer recognized it.
Orion Seven was not a room number.
It was the name of the seventh child enrolled in an experimental device trial nine years earlier.
