The Night at Saint Arden

Chapter 12 - The Night at Saint Arden

The warrant reached Saint Arden at 8:06 p.m.

By then, the facility had entered lockdown.

Administrators claimed a power failure disabled electronic doors. Families gathered outside the gates, some unaware their children had received experimental devices.

Elena stood beside Brooks as emergency crews cut the chain.

Inside, hallways smelled of disinfectant and overheated wiring. Staff had removed labels from medication cabinets. Computers displayed factory-reset screens.

Sophie Bell was found in a consultation room, furious and fully alert. She had refused every pill and activated the fire alarm to prevent staff from moving the children.

“I knew they would call me unstable,” she said. “So I made sure everyone could hear the alarm.”

Nine children wore Orion casts.

Two had no fractures.

A nurse named Kelly Marsh opened the locked pharmacy and surrendered patient records. Adrian had instructed Saint Arden to collect behavioral data before the federal contract deadline. The children were selected because their guardians had limited resources to challenge medical decisions.

One patient, six-year-old Jonah, had been classified as nonverbal. His chart said he did not report pain.

Sophie showed Elena a drawing Jonah made.

It depicted a needle inside his cast.

The same black sun appeared above him.

Adrian’s overnight cameras.

The children were transferred to independent hospitals. None suffered irreversible injury, but several required careful withdrawal from medication.

Public outrage exploded.

Northbridge’s remaining directors resigned.

The federal contract was canceled.

Adrian disappeared.

His car was found at a private airfield with blood on the steering wheel and a passport in the glove box. News reports speculated he had been kidnapped or killed.

Brooks suspected theater.

Adrian had staged Daniel’s absence, manipulated Lydia’s identity, and created entire medical histories. Disappearance was another story he knew how to write.

Mateo looked at the photograph of the abandoned car.

“He did not leave,” he said.

“How do you know?” Elena asked.

“He hates when other people touch his things. He would not leave his watch.”

The watch Adrian wore every day was missing from the car.

Its biometric system connected to Northbridge’s secure network. Engineers traced one final signal after the supposed disappearance.
