The House That Recorded Nothing

Chapter 03 - The House That Recorded Nothing

Detective Brooks obtained an emergency warrant for the Cross estate before sunrise.

The mansion contained thirty-two security cameras, twelve motion sensors, and a private server room Adrian once described as “more secure than a bank.” Every recording from the previous week had been erased.

The technician found no accidental failure.

Someone had deleted the footage in three stages, then overwritten the storage drives.

Adrian’s attorney called it routine privacy maintenance.

Elena called it fear.

She returned to the house with police to collect clothes for Mateo. The bedroom no longer looked like a place where a child had screamed. The cut plaster was gone. The syringe had been removed before officers arrived. The sheets had been changed.

Only the tiny bloodless puncture in the mattress remained where the needle fell.

In Daniel’s old office, the shelves were empty.

Adrian had kept the room locked since the funeral, claiming it was too painful for Elena. She now understood that grief had been another useful door.

Mateo said he entered using a brass key he found inside his father’s wooden chess set.

The chess set had vanished.

Elena searched the desk and found a rectangle of pale dust where a small camera once stood. Daniel had installed an independent security system during Northbridge’s early years after several research files disappeared.

It did not connect to the mansion network.

“Where did it save?” Brooks asked.

“I don’t know.”

A housekeeper named Alma watched from the hallway. She had worked for Adrian for eight years and avoided Elena’s eyes.

When the detective asked about the missing cast materials, Alma said she had seen nothing.

Then, as Elena passed, Alma slipped a folded laundry tag into her hand.

BLUE TRAIN. LEFT WHEEL.

Mateo owned a wooden train set in the playroom. The blue engine sat beneath a cabinet. Inside its left wheel, officers found a microSD card.

The card contained only seven minutes of video.

At first, the office appeared empty. Then Adrian and Lydia entered carrying archive boxes. Their conversation was partially obscured by the sound of rain.

“We only need the trust amendment,” Lydia said.

Adrian answered, “We need anything Daniel left about Orion.”

Mateo entered the frame.

He asked why they were touching his father’s things.

Adrian told him to go upstairs.

The boy noticed a folder labeled PEDIATRIC ORION TRIAL and lifted his toy camera.

The video shook. Adrian crossed the room. Mateo ran.

A crash sounded beyond the camera’s view.

Then Mateo screamed.

Lydia said, “His arm.”

Adrian replied, “Then make the accident useful.”

The recording ended.

Elena stood in the silent office, unable to breathe.

Alma began to cry.

“I heard him,” the housekeeper whispered. “I wanted to call you. Mr. Cross said he would have my daughter deported.”

Brooks took her statement.

Before they left, Elena opened the blue engine again.

Beneath the memory card was a second object: Daniel’s brass key.

Stamped into it were two words.

ORION — SEVEN.
