The Trial That Began Before He Was Born

Chapter 05 - The Trial That Began Before He Was Born

Mateo had been enrolled in the Orion Trial three months before his birth.

The discovery sounded impossible until Elena read the original research proposal.

Northbridge’s Orion system was designed to deliver tiny, timed doses of medication through orthopedic casts. Daniel imagined it helping disaster victims and children in remote areas receive pain relief without repeated injections.

Adrian saw a market worth billions.

The early device failed unpredictably. Temperature changes altered dose rates. Tubes kinked beneath padding. A sensor sometimes continued pumping after the medication should have stopped.

Daniel halted development.

Adrian continued it through a private clinic controlled by Lydia.

The prenatal enrollment document listed Mateo as “Subject Seven,” using genetic data collected during Elena’s pregnancy. Her signature appeared on the form.

Again, it was forged.

Daniel discovered the unauthorized trial shortly before the warehouse explosion that killed him.

His final board email accused Adrian of experimenting on children without proper consent and demanded an outside investigation. The email was never delivered. Northbridge’s server log showed it deleted from inside the executive office.

Adrian told the press Daniel had become erratic before his death.

The same language later used against Elena.

Gabriel traced six other Orion subjects. Four were children treated at Lydia’s clinic. Two had been in foster care. Their records described sudden confusion, sleep disturbances, and “behavioral instability” after wearing Northbridge casts.

One child, Sophie Bell, disappeared from medical follow-up after her foster placement changed.

Elena felt the story widening beyond her family.

Adrian had not created the device only to control Mateo. He had spent years using vulnerable children to perfect a product Daniel refused to approve.

The prototype inside Mateo’s cast contained the newest version.

If the public test succeeded, Northbridge would receive a federal disaster-medicine contract large enough to double its value. Mateo’s trust shares would become worth nearly a billion dollars.

“He was both the heir and the experiment,” Gabriel said.

Detective Brooks found the private Orion clinic shuttered. Computers were gone. Files had been burned in metal bins behind the building.

One hard drive survived.

It contained a list of patients identified by numbers.

Subject Seven’s recent entry read:

COGNITIVE DECLINE SUFFICIENT FOR GUARDIANSHIP.

Below it was a note signed by Lydia:

MOTHER REMAINS THE PRIMARY VARIABLE.

Elena understood.

Adrian had spent years weakening her credibility because she was the only person legally positioned to stop him.

The medication Lydia gave Elena was not treating anxiety.

It was creating a record of it.
