Chapter 09 - The Hearing at Nine

The second guardianship hearing took place three weeks later.

Adrian’s lawyers changed strategy.

They no longer denied that the cast contained medication. They argued the treatment was necessary because Mateo presented an immediate psychiatric risk and Elena interfered with care.

They submitted years of notes describing Mateo as impulsive, aggressive, and prone to false stories.

Every note came from Lydia’s clinic.

Gabriel presented school reports showing a quiet child who loved engineering and had no disciplinary history. Teachers testified that Mateo became sleepy and confused only after Northbridge appointments.

Then Adrian called Elena’s former psychiatrist.

Dr. Simon Crest described her as emotionally dependent and vulnerable to paranoid beliefs. He cited sessions after Daniel’s death in which Elena feared Adrian was monitoring her.

Gabriel displayed Northbridge payments to Crest.

The psychiatrist had earned nearly a million dollars as a consultant while treating Elena.

“Did you tell your patient?” Gabriel asked.

“No.”

“Did you know Mr. Cross had access to your session summaries?”

Crest hesitated.

The judge ordered the records sealed and referred him to the licensing board.

Adrian testified last.

He described loving Mateo as his own son. His voice broke at practiced intervals. He said he dedicated his life to protecting Daniel’s legacy and only sought guardianship because Elena’s grief had become dangerous.

Then Mateo asked to enter the courtroom.

The judge allowed him to sit beside a child advocate rather than take the witness stand.

He carried the blue train.

Adrian looked at him and smiled.

Mateo removed the left wheel and placed the memory card on the table.

“You told me Dad’s cameras were broken,” he said. “You told me nobody saw.”

The courtroom monitor played the office video.

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

Mateo did not describe the injury. He did not need to. The sound of his scream filled the room.

The judge permanently removed Adrian from the trust, placed Mateo in Elena’s sole custody, and issued a criminal referral for perjury and evidence tampering.

Outside court, reporters shouted for Mateo.

Elena covered him with her coat.

She refused every interview request.

Her son had already spent too long being treated as evidence.

That evening, Northbridge’s board voted Adrian out as chief executive.

The result was announced publicly.

Privately, Adrian still controlled six directors through debt, favors, and secrets.
