The Trial of a Perfect Family

Chapter 17 - The Trial of a Perfect Family
The jury deliberated for four days.
Adrian was convicted of child abuse, kidnapping conspiracy, illegal human experimentation, wire fraud, obstruction, attempted evidence destruction, and conspiracy related to Daniel’s disappearance and the warehouse explosion.
He was acquitted on one attempted-murder count because prosecutors could not prove the explosion was intended to kill rather than imprison Daniel through presumed death.
Elena felt no disappointment.
Justice did not require exaggeration to become meaningful.
Serena received a reduced sentence for cooperation but remained permanently barred from medicine. Dr. Crest lost his license and faced fraud charges. Several Northbridge directors pleaded guilty to concealing trial data.
Saint Arden closed.
Its patients moved to community programs with independent advocates.
The Orion families received compensation from executive assets and the company’s insurers. Elena insisted the settlements contain no silence clauses.
Daniel returned home slowly.
He and Elena did not pretend twelve missing years could be repaired through one embrace. They learned each other again as altered people. Some days, grief filled the room. Other days, Mateo defeated Daniel at chess and accused him of losing deliberately.
“I am neurologically compromised,” Daniel joked.
Mateo frowned.
“That is not funny.”
Daniel apologized.
The family learned that survival did not automatically create wisdom. It created the opportunity to practice it.
At sentencing, Adrian addressed the court.
He said Northbridge would never have existed without his ambition. He said history would remember the lives Orion eventually saved.
The judge answered that scientific value did not erase stolen consent.
Adrian received a sentence that would likely keep him imprisoned for the rest of his life.
As officers led him away, he turned toward Mateo.
Elena stepped into his line of sight.
Not dramatically.
Simply enough to block it.
Outside the courthouse, journalists asked Mateo to raise his healed arm for photographs.
Elena refused.
His body was not a campaign symbol.
They went home through a private exit and stopped for pancakes.

Mateo ordered extra syrup.
No one measured the choice.
