Chapter 16 - The Star Came Home
After Malcolm’s final appeal failed, the court returned Emily’s pendant to Rebecca.
The silver had been cleaned only enough to remove forensic residue. The bent point and scorch mark remained.
Rebecca held it in the evidence room where she first heard Emily’s recording.
For years, she believed getting the star back would close something.
It did not.
An object could return.
A daughter could not.
Rebecca considered placing it in Emily’s memorial case. Then she thought about the theft, the hidden card and Celeste wearing it through the Pentagon.
The pendant had become larger than a private relic.
With Daniel’s consent and the family’s approval, Rebecca loaned it to the National Museum of Military Service. It was displayed open, showing the hidden compartment.
Beside it appeared no photograph of Malcolm.
The exhibit focused on Emily, the seven convoy members and the people who preserved evidence.
A transcription of Emily’s final message ended the display.
Visitors often remained longest at the four engraved words:
STAND WHERE TRUTH REQUIRES.
Rebecca visited anonymously during the first month.
A teenage girl read the inscription and asked her father whether soldiers were allowed to disobey orders.
The father hesitated.
A museum guide answered carefully.
“They are required to refuse unlawful orders and report danger. The difficult part is building systems that protect them when they do.”
Rebecca walked away before anyone recognized her.
