Chapter 08 - Celeste Chose a Side

Celeste Voss met Malcolm when she was twenty-nine and running fundraising events for veterans’ housing.

He introduced her to donors, expanded her charity and placed her beside national leaders. She believed his access allowed her to do good at a scale she could never reach alone.

Over time, the charity became a passageway for procurement companies seeking influence.

Celeste asked few questions.

Meridian Shield donated millions. Its executives received private dinners with Malcolm. Administrative fees paid for Celeste’s travel, clothing and events.

She told herself every compromise funded another home for a veteran.

After receiving the star, she questioned the scorch mark and damaged point. Malcolm said it belonged to an officer who sold military secrets and died before prosecution.

He instructed Celeste to have it reset as a necklace because no evidence vault would search her jewelry collection.

She agreed.

That decision placed her inside the conspiracy even if she had not known Emily’s name.

Prosecutors offered limited protection if Celeste disclosed charity records and testified truthfully.

Malcolm’s attorneys sent her a message: spouses could not be forced to destroy each other.

Celeste understood the threat beneath the reassurance.

He expected silence because marriage had made her reputation dependent on his.

She chose to cooperate.

Her records revealed that Meridian Shield paid her charity twelve million dollars before receiving the armor contract. Half returned through consulting firms controlled by Malcolm’s associates.

Celeste also produced a voice memo recorded during an argument.

Malcolm said, “Seven dead soldiers are a tragedy. A collapsed defense supply chain is a national threat. I chose the larger duty.”

Celeste asked whether Emily had to die.

Malcolm answered, “She chose the road after being told to stop.”

The recording contained no remorse.

It transformed the case.

At the preliminary hearing, Celeste removed the necklace chain from an evidence bag and placed it beside the witness microphone.

“I wore this because I wanted to believe expensive things meant I had earned my place,” she said. “It was the property of a woman whose name my husband taught me not to ask.”

Rebecca watched from the gallery.
