Sergeant Daniel Ortiz had lived quietly since leaving the Army.
He repaired agricultural equipment in New Mexico and avoided news about Khemara Pass. Whenever reporters contacted him, a government attorney reminded him that convoy systems remained classified.
Rebecca’s suspension convinced him to stop being quiet.
He traveled to Washington with the damaged body-armor fragment surgeons had removed from his shoulder. Daniel had kept it after military investigators said they did not need it.
An independent laboratory compared the fragment to Meridian Shield’s certified material.
The composition was different.
The panels installed in Emily’s vehicles used cheaper ceramic, lower-grade backing and counterfeit serial stamps. The defect could not have been an accidental manufacturing variation.
Daniel also carried a paper notebook.
During rehabilitation, he had written everything he remembered: Pike changing the convoy time, civilian contractors replacing armor panels at night and Emily arguing over the radio about the route.
His entries were dated before the official report.
In a sworn statement, Daniel described seeing Owen Pike near Emily’s body after the attack. Pike removed something from her neck before the civilian recovery team arrived.
The Army claimed Pike had remained at headquarters that day.
Aircraft logs placed him on a helicopter landing at Khemara Pass thirty-six minutes after the final shot.
Pike was arrested for obstruction and evidence theft.
He requested an attorney and refused questions.
Then investigators showed him the star.
His confidence disappeared.
Pike said he recovered the pendant under Malcolm’s direct order. He delivered it to a procurement security officer, believing the data would be destroyed.
The officer instead used it as leverage.
Years later, after a dispute over payment, he placed the star in a donation box linked to Celeste’s charity with instructions that it reach Malcolm privately.
Celeste found it first.
She wore it after Malcolm told her it was a rare military jewel confiscated from a traitor.
Pike agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration.
Rebecca listened to the testimony without sympathy.
But the facts mattered more than the emotion they deserved.
The conspiracy had not required every person to share the same motive.
Some wanted money.
Some wanted promotion.
