Chapter 04 - The Woman Who Wore the Evidence
Celeste claimed she had never seen the pendant before Malcolm gave it to her.
Her story changed during the first interview.
First, it was an anniversary gift purchased in Geneva.
Then it was donated anonymously to her military-family charity.
Finally, she said an aide found it inside a box of jewelry collected for auction.
Investigators asked for the box.
It no longer existed.
They asked for the receipt.
The document listed a Swiss dealer who had died two years earlier. His gallery had closed before the supposed sale.
Celeste grew angry.
She accused Rebecca of using military authority to intimidate a civilian and said the pendant should be returned immediately because it was a family gift.
DCIS agent Lena Ortiz placed a photograph of Emily on the table.
The captain stood beside her vehicle in desert gear. The same star hung at her throat. The bent point and scorch mark were visible.
Celeste stopped speaking.
The necklace clasp was opened under camera.
Inside the star’s central setting was a wafer-thin encrypted memory card protected by wax and a rubber seal.
Someone had tried to remove it. Fresh scratches marked the hinge, but the mechanism required pressure at two hidden points. Without knowing the jeweler’s design, forcing it risked destroying the card.
Rebecca opened it in seconds.
The star had been made from her own insignia. She knew every seam.
Investigators created forensic copies before viewing the contents.
The first files were photographs of armor plates stamped with duplicate serial numbers. The second contained inspection reports showing microscopic fractures. A spreadsheet connected failed panels to Meridian Shield Systems.
The final folder was encrypted separately.
Its title read:
IF THE CONVOY IS MOVED, VOSS KNOWS.
Celeste asked for an attorney.
Rebecca watched from behind the interview glass.
She wanted rage to feel clean.
Instead, she saw a frightened woman wearing a dead soldier’s last attempt to tell the truth.
Celeste might have known everything.
She might also have been given the star by a husband who believed jewelry was the safest place to hide evidence no one would dare inspect.
Ortiz reminded Rebecca that investigators would establish the facts.
Rebecca understood.
She had not spent years demanding an honest investigation only to replace one assumption with another.
But when Celeste was escorted out, she glanced toward Malcolm’s office and whispered:
“He told me the woman who owned it betrayed the country.”
