The Lobby Where the Star Appeared

Chapter 19 - The Lobby Where the Star Appeared

The Pentagon lobby was renovated fifteen years after Rebecca first saw Celeste step from the elevator.

The marble counter remained, but the incident system operated independently. A small plaque near the reception desk explained that any service member or civilian could contact investigative authorities without command approval.

Noah Grant, now an inspector-general attorney, invited Rebecca to the reopening.

She arrived without uniform and carried no deployment bag.

The elevator doors opened.

For one reflexive second, Rebecca saw Celeste’s black dress and Emily’s star against it. Memory placed the old scene over the empty elevator.

Then a group of young officers stepped out laughing quietly.

The past released the room.

A new sergeant stood behind the desk. Noah introduced Rebecca without listing her rank.

The sergeant recognized her anyway.

He said the story of the preserved recording was taught during security orientation.

Rebecca looked toward the camera above the counter.

Years earlier, Malcolm believed the building belonged more to his authority than to the truth. Celeste believed a stolen object became hers when wrapped in luxury. Rebecca believed two general stars would be enough to make people listen.

All three had been wrong.

The object that changed the case was small enough to hang from a chain.

The person who preserved the first public evidence was junior enough to fear making a phone call.

Before leaving, Rebecca visited the museum display one final time.

Emily’s pendant rested open beneath clear glass.

A child pressed close to see the hidden compartment.

Her mother read the engraved words aloud.

Stand where truth requires.

Rebecca touched two fingers to the glass, not as a salute and not as goodbye.

The star had traveled from her collar to Emily’s neck, through a battlefield, a thief’s hands, a powerful woman’s jewelry box and a federal courtroom.

At last, it had reached a place where no one needed permission to see what it contained.

Rebecca walked back through the lobby and out into daylight.

Behind her, the doors remained open.
