Chapter 05 - The File Named Voss
The separately encrypted folder required a password.
Emily had left no instructions.
Rebecca tried her daughter’s birthday, service number and the words engraved on the star. None worked. Daniel Ortiz suggested the date of the Khemara convoy.
The folder remained sealed.
Then Rebecca remembered Emily’s childhood habit. Whenever she hid something important, she used the call sign Rebecca had given her during camping trips.
Northlight.
The folder opened.
Inside were voice recordings from the week before the ambush.
Emily had confronted Colonel Aaron Pike, logistics commander for the convoy. She said the armor serial numbers matched panels previously rejected during testing.
Pike ordered her to ignore the discrepancy.
A second recording captured Pike speaking to Malcolm Voss over a secure conference line.
Malcolm’s voice was unmistakable.
“The convoy moves Thursday. No delay, no independent inspection.”
Pike warned that Emily had copied the test records.
Malcolm answered, “Then make sure Captain Hayes returns with the convoy and not with a story.”
The words stopped short of ordering murder.
The next file moved closer.
It contained route coordinates sent from Pike’s office to a Meridian contractor three hours before the ambush. That contractor had transferred money to an intermediary later linked to the attacking militia.
Emily had uncovered not only defective armor but a plan to expose the convoy to attack before the evidence reached inspectors.
The final recording was Emily speaking directly to Rebecca.
“Mom, if you hear this, they will call what happened battlefield uncertainty. It was not. The panels failed, the route was leaked, and people inside our own system chose the contract over us.”
Her voice remained steady until the final sentence.
“I am sorry the truth reached you after I did not.”
Rebecca removed her glasses.
Everyone in the evidence room remained silent.
For three years, she had imagined Emily’s final moments as chaos. Now she understood that her daughter had spent them building a path back to accountability.
Ortiz asked Rebecca to step away from the investigation officially.
As Emily’s mother, she could not direct the criminal case.
Rebecca agreed.
Then the Army suspended her security clearance.
The order came from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, citing possible mishandling of classified evidence.
