Samuel wrote Evelyn from prison.
The first letters blamed Serena, Bell and Northline. The next blamed Evelyn’s refusal to retire. Later letters described childhood memories and asked whether she remembered teaching him to swim.
Evelyn did.
She did not answer immediately.
A therapist helped her separate contact from forgiveness and forgiveness from restored access.
After two years, she agreed to one supervised visit.
Samuel entered expecting an embrace.
Evelyn remained seated.
He asked why she had come.
“To see whether you can speak about what happened without turning your choice into someone else’s fault.”
Samuel said he was sorry she was hurt.
She corrected him.
“You planned for me to become helpless or die.”
He looked away.
The visit ended early.
Evelyn returned six months later.
This time, Samuel said the words directly.
He had wanted control. He believed the company belonged to him. He treated her life as an obstacle.
The admission did not repair trust.
It created the first honest conversation available to them.
Evelyn chose occasional letters afterward. She offered no legal influence, money beyond permitted prison support or public statement of reconciliation.
Love remained.
