Why Noah Watched the Bartender

Chapter 03 - Why Noah Watched the Bartender

Noah Bennett had worked at the Pierce Grand Hotel for eight months.

He was studying forensic chemistry at night and waiting banquet tables to cover tuition. Most guests looked through him unless they wanted another drink.

Samuel looked through him even while giving orders.

That was why Noah heard everything.

Twenty minutes before the gala dinner, Samuel entered the service bar with Serena. The head bartender, Calvin Ross, sent the other employees to collect champagne.

Noah remained behind a stack of linen boxes.

Samuel removed a small dark vial from his jacket.

“Only her glass,” he said.

Calvin asked what it contained.

“Prescribed medication. She refuses to take it.”

Serena added, “The doctor said it may make her sleepy. We cannot have her wandering around the ballroom afterward.”

Calvin poured part of the liquid into Evelyn’s whiskey.

Noah saw the gloves.

People did not wear gloves to add harmless medicine to their mother’s drink.

He photographed the vial through a gap between the boxes. The label had been removed, but a pharmacy code remained near the bottom.

Then Samuel asked Calvin which waiter served Evelyn’s table.

Noah stepped out before the bartender could choose someone else.

Samuel barely looked at him.

“Make sure my mother finishes that drink. Send me a message when the glass is empty.”

Noah nodded.

His mother had once worked as a housekeeper at a Pierce hotel in Philadelphia. Evelyn met her during an unannounced inspection and helped secure treatment when a supervisor ignored her chest pain.

The intervention saved her life.

Noah did not know Evelyn personally.

He knew enough not to deliver the glass in silence.

After warning her, he carried the sealed container through the kitchen and placed it inside a locked food-safety refrigerator. He called the number Evelyn provided.

Dr. Lena Ortiz answered immediately.

She was not only a physician.

She directed an independent medical-integrity unit created by Evelyn after a guest died from a substituted medication at another hotel.

“Do not leave the sample,” Ortiz said. “I am sending an investigator.”

Noah looked through the service door.

Samuel was kneeling beside Evelyn’s staged collapse while Serena searched the table.

The couple did not look frightened.

They looked hurried.

Serena found Evelyn’s phone.

Samuel found the handbag.

Neither found the voting key.

Evelyn had sewn it inside the lining of her jacket that morning.
