James’s Own Trial

Chapter 12 - James’s Own Trial

The criminal case ended.

James’s accountability did not.

The foundation board investigated every year he signed reports without reading them. His name appeared on approvals for grants that never reached schools and clinics.

Richard forged some signatures.

Others were real.

James had trusted summaries prepared by people who benefited from his inattention.

He returned millions in compensation and accepted a civil penalty.

Newspapers that once called him a visionary heir called him negligent.

He did not fight the word.

At home, Lily began refusing goodnight hugs.

James worried she was withdrawing.

The therapist explained that children recovering from control often tested whether affection could be optional.

“If you make her hug you to prove she loves you, you repeat the lesson that adults own her body.”

James began asking.

“Hug, high five, or wave?”

Some nights Lily chose a wave.

He accepted it.

Rosa became Lily’s legal temporary caregiver whenever James traveled, though he stopped all nonessential travel for two years.

He did not announce the sacrifice publicly.

Parenting was not charity.

It was presence.

James also attended a support group for nonoffending parents who failed to recognize abuse. He resisted the label at first.

“I did not know.”

Another father replied, “Neither did I. The question is what our children experienced while we were comfortable not knowing.”

James wrote the sentence in a notebook.

He apologized to Lily without asking her to make him feel better.

“I believed Vanessa when she said you were difficult. I should have asked you.”

“You asked sometimes.”

“I stopped when the answers made life complicated.”

Lily looked at him.

“Will you stop again?”

“I may make mistakes. But I will not punish you for telling me.”

She thought for a long time.

“Okay.”

It was not forgiveness.

May you like

It was a small piece of trust offered under new conditions.

James treated it carefully.
