The Push

Chapter 02 - The Push

Vanessa dragged Lily farther along the pool terrace, beyond the music and laughter.

Rose petals floated across the water. The city lights below the hill reflected like broken stars.

“Take off the locket,” Vanessa ordered.

Lily covered it with both hands.

“No.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

During the ten months James had been away, Lily had learned not to say that word. Refusal meant cold baths, locked bedrooms, missing meals, or another story told to her father about tantrums.

But James was home now.

The knowledge gave her courage.

“Daddy said Mommy’s things are mine.”

Vanessa gripped her shoulders.

“Your father says many things before someone explains what they cost.”

She reached for the chain.

Lily twisted away.

The thin silver necklace snapped. The locket struck the stone beside the pool.

Lily cried out and bent to retrieve it.

Vanessa shoved her.

The child’s body lifted from the edge and fell backward into the water.

The splash cut through the music.

For one terrible second, everyone froze.

Lily did not know how to swim.

Her white dress opened beneath the surface like a sinking flower. She kicked wildly, unable to understand which direction led to air.

James emerged from the glass doors just as her hands disappeared.

“Lily!”

He ran.

Vanessa stood at the edge with both palms raised.

“She slipped!”

James did not stop to remove his jacket or shoes. He dove into the pool, found the pale shape beneath the petals, and pulled his daughter upward.

Lily coughed against his shoulder.

He carried her to the edge, where Rosa and a doctor from the party helped lift them out.

Vanessa approached.

“She was running. I warned her.”

Lily clung to James’s soaked shirt.

“She pushed me.”

The terrace became silent.

Vanessa laughed nervously. “She is frightened and confused.”

James looked at his daughter.

Lily was shivering, but her eyes were fixed on the woman in red.

“She broke Mommy’s necklace,” she whispered.

James saw the snapped chain beside Vanessa’s shoe.

Then he noticed something else.

The small red recording light beneath the balcony had gone dark.

His security system was designed never to shut down during a public event.

He stood with Lily in his arms.

“Rosa, take her inside and call an ambulance.”

Vanessa reached toward him.

“James, please listen.”

He stepped away.

“I am going to.”

May you like

He looked toward the dead camera.

“To everything.”
