What Lily Had Been Told

Chapter 04 - What Lily Had Been Told
Lily refused to sleep unless James remained beside the hospital bed.
When a nurse entered, the child asked whether Vanessa had sent her.
“No,” James said. “Vanessa cannot come near you.”
“Ever?”
“Ever, unless you choose otherwise when you are older.”
Lily studied his face.
“You said she was my new mommy.”
James felt the words like a verdict.
“I was wrong to ask you to call her that.”
“She got mad when I didn’t.”
“How did she get mad?”
Lily looked toward the hallway.
James waited.
“She made me stand in Mommy’s closet with the light off. She said if I cried, you would stay away longer.”
He closed his eyes.
“What else?”
“She took my tablet. She said you stopped calling because I asked too many questions.”
James remembered receiving messages saying Lily was adjusting well and preferred playing with friends to video calls.
Vanessa had written them.
Lily described punishments that had been disguised as discipline: food removed from her plate, the bedroom locked from outside, cold showers after accidents, and hours spent copying apologies for being “ungrateful.”
Rosa had tried to intervene.
Vanessa threatened to report her immigration documents as fraudulent and accuse her son of stealing from the estate.
James asked why Rosa never contacted him.
“She did,” Lily said. “Vanessa said you chose not to answer.”
The child reached beneath the blanket and removed a folded piece of paper.
It was a drawing of the airport.
Lily stood beneath the arrivals sign holding her welcome poster. James appeared beyond the doors.
Vanessa was drawn behind Lily with no face.
“I thought when you came home, she would stop.”
James held the picture with both hands.
Coming home had not made him a hero.
It had only made him a witness.
The next morning, Detective Maya Torres interviewed Lily with a child specialist. James watched through a glass wall as his daughter answered carefully, glancing toward the door after every sentence.
She had learned that telling the truth could bring punishment.
Afterward, Torres placed the brass key from the locket inside an evidence envelope.
“Do you know what it opens?”
James shook his head.
Rosa did.
“It belongs to Anna’s box.”
James turned.

“What box?”
“The one your first wife told me to hide if anything happened to her.”
