The Man in the Greenhouse

Chapter 08 - The Man in the Greenhouse

Police surrounded the Hart estate.

The greenhouse door stood open. The iron evidence box was gone, though investigators had already copied its contents.

Richard wanted something else.

Beneath the bench, officers found a second hidden compartment containing Anna’s original foundation certificates. Those documents proved Lily—not James—was the controlling beneficiary of the family’s charitable assets.

Without them, Richard could argue that the trust amendment was incomplete.

A motion sensor captured him entering at 2:13 a.m.

He wore a maintenance uniform and knew the blind spots.

Richard had designed the estate security system.

Detective Torres traced the threatening photograph to a prepaid phone purchased near Lily’s school.

The school went into lockdown.

James and Lily were moved to a protected location.

Vanessa, now released on strict bail pending the larger investigation, denied contact with her brother.

Phone records proved otherwise.

She had called an unregistered number sixteen times from her attorney’s office.

The calls lasted only seconds.

Investigators believed they used a spoken code.

James agreed to meet Vanessa under supervision.

She arrived wearing a cream suit and the calm expression she used at charity events.

“Tell Richard to surrender.”

“I do not control my brother.”

“He threatened Lily.”

“You cannot prove he sent it.”

James placed the airport sign photograph between them.

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the handwritten threat.

She recognized the wording.

“Richard used to say every return creates a departure,” James said. “You wrote it in a birthday card once.”

Vanessa looked away.

“What does he want?”

“The certificates.”

“He already has money.”

“He wants immunity.”

“He will not get it.”

“Then Lily remains in danger.”

For a moment, Vanessa’s composure failed.

Not from concern for the child.

From fear that Richard might expose her to save himself.

She offered a location.

An abandoned private airfield north of the city.

Richard planned to leave that night using a plane registered to one of the foundation’s shell companies.

Police found him beside the runway carrying the certificates and two passports.

He ran toward the aircraft.

Officers arrested him before the engine started.

In his bag was another item.

Anna’s original silver wedding ring.

It had been removed from her hand after the crash.

Richard had kept it as leverage over Vanessa, proof that she visited the accident scene before emergency services arrived.
