Vanessa’s Visit to the Crash

Chapter 09 - Vanessa’s Visit to the Crash

Vanessa had not merely known about Anna’s death.

She was there.

Richard’s phone archive contained old messages recovered from a hidden backup.

Anna is still moving.

Do not call until Mercer finds the files.

Vanessa sent the message eleven minutes after the crash.

She arrived with Richard because they expected Anna to carry the foundation ledgers in her car. When they could not find the documents, they left her injured beside the road.

A passing driver discovered the wreck nearly thirty minutes later.

Medical experts believed Anna might have survived if emergency services had been called immediately.

James listened to the timeline inside Detective Torres’s office.

He imagined Anna conscious, waiting beneath rain and broken glass while the people who later entered his home searched her belongings.

Vanessa had attended the funeral.

She held Lily.

She told James that Anna’s death taught her how quickly life could change.

The cruelty of the performance was almost impossible to understand.

Richard agreed to cooperate in exchange for prosecutors considering a reduced sentence. He described the theft network, the crash, and Vanessa’s plan to gain guardianship.

“She enjoyed controlling the girl,” he added.

Detective Torres stopped him.

“Do not minimize your own role by making her worse.”

Richard looked down.

James visited Anna’s grave with Lily.

The child carried the repaired airport sign.

“Was Mommy scared?” she asked.

James chose honesty without detail.

“Probably.”

“Did she know I loved her?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because she knew you.”

Lily placed the sign against the stone.

WELCOME HOME, DADDY faced outward.

On the back, she wrote a new message with James’s help:

MOMMY, WE FOUND THE TRUTH.

They sat beneath the trees until the afternoon cooled.

James had spent years telling Lily that Anna died in an accident no one could prevent. Now he feared every memory he gave his daughter had become false.

A child therapist later told him otherwise.

“The love was true. The bedtime stories were true. The people who hid the cause do not own every memory around the death.”

James began learning the same lesson Lily needed.

A lie could surround a life without making the life itself unreal.
