Chapter 14 - Vanessa’s First Letter
Two years after sentencing, Vanessa wrote to Lily.
The prison reviewed the letter before forwarding it to James.
My sweet girl,
I am sorry the pool frightened you. I was under enormous pressure and made a terrible mistake. I hope one day you understand how much I loved your father and wanted our family to work.
James read the letter twice.
He saw the apology narrowing the harm into fear and pressure. He saw Vanessa turning Lily into the person expected to understand.
He showed it to the therapist, not to Lily.
The therapist supported withholding it until Lily could decide with informed consent.
James sent Vanessa a response through attorneys.
Do not contact Lily again. An apology that asks a child to understand the adult who harmed her is not accountability.
Vanessa wrote to James instead.
She accused him of poisoning Lily against her and turning one impulsive moment into a life sentence.
He stopped reading.
A year later, another letter arrived.
This one was different.
I pushed her because she refused me. I had spent years making everyone obey through money, fear, and stories. When Lily said no, I saw a child I could not control. I chose to harm her. Nothing about pressure excuses it.
James placed the letter in a sealed file.
He still did not show Lily.
Change in prison could matter without creating a right to return.
When Lily turned twelve, James told her the letters existed.
“You can read them now, later, or never.”
She chose never.
Then, after several months, she requested the second one only.
She read it at the therapist’s office.
“Is she better now?” Lily asked.
“She may understand more.”
“Does understanding make her safe?”
“Not automatically.”
Lily folded the letter.
“I do not want to answer.”
“You do not have to.”
She placed it back in the envelope.
