The Camera That Was Still Recording

Chapter 03 - The Camera That Was Still Recording

The main security server had been erased.

Every camera covering the pool terrace showed a blank screen from 7:42 to 8:16 p.m. The push occurred at 7:58.

Vanessa stood beside James in the control room, wrapped in a silver shawl.

“You see?” she said. “There is no proof because nothing happened.”

James turned slowly.

“Missing footage is not proof of innocence.”

“The system has been failing for months.”

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“I did not want to burden you overseas.”

The same explanation had covered everything.

Lily’s missed calls.

The nanny’s resignation.

The school’s request for a family meeting.

Vanessa always protected him from “small problems” so he could focus on work.

Rosa entered with the family’s technology consultant, Marcus Lee.

Marcus connected a private laptop.

“Mr. Hart asked me to install a remote backup two years ago,” he said. “It is separate from the house server.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

James entered a password only he knew.

The first recovered clip showed Vanessa cornering Lily beside the pool.

The second recorded the broken locket.

The third showed both hands on the child’s shoulders.

Then the push.

No one spoke.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“That angle is misleading.”

Marcus replayed it.

Lily did not trip.

She did not lose balance.

Vanessa stepped forward and drove both hands into her back.

James stopped the video.

His breathing became shallow.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward the open door, where police officers waited.

“She was provoking me.”

“She is seven.”

“She has been poisoning you against me since our wedding.”

“She is seven.”

“You have no idea what she is like when you are gone.”

Rosa stepped forward.

“I do.”

Vanessa turned on her.

“You are dismissed.”

James answered before Rosa could.

“You have no authority to dismiss anyone.”

The police requested Vanessa’s statement.

She demanded a lawyer and refused to leave voluntarily until officers told her the footage supported an arrest for child endangerment and assault.

As they escorted her through the foyer, Vanessa looked back at James.

“You think this is about a necklace? Ask your precious housekeeper what Anna hid inside it.”

James glanced toward Rosa.

Rosa’s face had gone pale.

At the hospital, Lily was treated for water inhalation and shock. She remained curled against her father beneath a heated blanket.

James placed the broken locket on the table.

One hinge had opened when it hit the stone.

Inside was a tiny photograph of Anna holding newborn Lily.

Behind the photograph lay something James had never seen.

A narrow brass key.
