Chapter 13 - Anna’s Foundation
The stolen money was recovered through seized properties, insurance settlements, and the sale of Richard’s companies.
The Hart Children’s Foundation could have resumed under James.
He refused.
The organization was rebuilt with an independent board composed of teachers, social workers, former foster youth, hospital staff, and community representatives.
James held one nonvoting seat for two years, then stepped down.
The first restored grant reopened a swimming program for children from low-income neighborhoods.
Lily attended the opening but remained far from the pool.
No one pressured her to enter.
A female instructor named Nora sat beside her on the steps and discussed goggles, breathing, and why floating worked.
For three weeks, Lily only watched.
On the fourth, she placed one foot in the shallow water.
James stood behind the glass wall, not at the edge. He wanted to rush closer.
Nora signaled him to remain.
Lily entered on her own.
Months later, she swam across the smallest lane while Rosa cheered quietly.
James cried.
The foundation renamed the emergency safety fund after Anna, but Lily requested a second name.
The Anna Hart and Rosa Mendes Protection Fund provided legal aid to children and domestic workers reporting abuse.
Rosa objected.
“I did what anyone should do.”
Lily answered, “But not everyone did.”
The repaired silver locket was displayed only once, at the fund’s opening. Afterward, James returned it to Lily.
She wore it on ordinary days.
Never because a ceremony required it.
The airport sign was framed inside James’s home office.
He considered replacing the stained cardboard with a professional copy.
Lily refused.
“The real one came with me.”
The sign’s corners were bent. One star had smeared beneath airport rain. On the back remained the message to Anna.
