Chapter 16 - The Airport Again
Five years after James returned, Lily asked to visit the airport.
He assumed she wanted to travel.
She wanted to stand in the arrivals hall.
They went early on a quiet morning. The glass doors opened and closed as families met beneath flight boards. Children ran toward grandparents. Drivers held printed names.
Lily carried the original sign.
She stood where she had waited at seven.
“I thought if I smiled enough, you would stay.”
James felt the old shame return.
“I should have known something was wrong.”
“You looked happy.”
“I was happy to see you.”
“That is why I did not tell you there.”
James understood.
Children often protected reunion before protecting themselves. Lily had feared that truth would send him back through the doors.
He knelt beside her.
“You never have to earn my staying by smiling.”
“I know now.”
A flight from Singapore arrived.
Travelers crossed the same threshold James had crossed years earlier.
Lily turned the sign around.
The back now carried three messages.
MOMMY, WE FOUND THE TRUTH.
DADDY, YOU STAYED.
LILY, YOU SAVED YOURSELF.
James read the final line.
“You wrote that?”
“Nora helped.”
He smiled through tears.
“It is true.”
They sat near the window and watched planes move across the runway.
Lily no longer remembered every detail of the welcome party. Trauma had preserved some moments sharply and blurred others.
She remembered the water.
She remembered James’s arms.
She also remembered saying no before the push.
For years, adults described her rescue as the moment her father dove into the pool.
Lily understood something more complicated.
Her rescue began when she refused to surrender the locket.
