Chapter 11 - The Mechanic From Mountain Pass
The invoice from Northstar led detectives to Frank Delaney, a retired automotive technician living in Nevada.
At first, Frank denied remembering Daniel’s car.
Then investigators showed him the payment record.
He began to cry.
Victor’s security chief, Owen Pike, had brought the vehicle to Frank’s private workshop two nights before the crash. He claimed Daniel wanted a racing modification. Owen paid cash for Frank to weaken a hydraulic brake line in a way that would fail under sustained pressure.
Frank refused.
Owen reminded him that his undocumented brother worked for a Mercer subcontractor and could be deported. Frank completed the alteration but secretly replaced the damaged line before returning the car.
He thought he had prevented harm.
Later, someone modified it again.
Frank kept the removed part and a photograph of Owen’s written instruction because he feared being blamed. He stored both in a metal box for four years.
The original instruction carried Owen’s fingerprints.
Detectives arrested Owen.
Faced with the document, videos from Mercer House and financial transfers, he requested a cooperation agreement.
Owen admitted Victor ordered Daniel’s brakes sabotaged. The first mechanic did not complete the job, so Owen used a company garage. Victor planned only to frighten Daniel into surrendering the ledger, he claimed.
But after the crash, Victor ordered him to retrieve Daniel’s briefcase before emergency services arrived.
The briefcase was empty.
Victor believed Daniel had hidden the ledger with Sarah.
Owen supervised the surveillance outside Noah’s school and the break-in at Sarah’s home. He also helped create the false restraining-order evidence used to portray her as unstable.
The district attorney added conspiracy and homicide charges.
Victor was arrested at a private airport before boarding a flight to Switzerland.
He told cameras that a frightened widow, a disloyal lawyer and an ambitious prosecutor had invented a story around a child’s notebook.
Sarah watched the arrest from home.
Noah asked whether the man who killed his father would go to prison.
Sarah answered carefully.
“Evidence gives the court a chance to make that decision. We do not know the result yet.”
