Chapter 06 - The Attorney Who Knew Too Much
Laura Bennett had not forged Jonathan’s transfer.
But she had suspected for years that something was wrong.
After Jonathan’s stroke, Victor asked her to prepare emergency voting documents. He provided medical certifications and trustee approvals that appeared valid. Laura processed them without speaking privately to Jonathan.
Later, when she tried to review the originals, they had disappeared.
Victor promoted her, increased her salary and gradually involved her in decisions she could no longer question without exposing her earlier negligence. Every year of silence made the next year harder.
Daniel came to her one week before his death.
He carried copies of transfers to Northstar Civic Partners, a company Laura had never heard of. He believed Victor controlled it through nominees. Daniel asked her to protect Sarah and Noah if anything happened.
Laura told him she needed more time.
He died before she answered.
Standing in the locked foyer, Laura understood that time had always been Victor’s strongest weapon. He delayed truth until witnesses became ashamed of waiting.
Sarah demanded to know why Laura never contacted her.
Laura did not defend herself.
“I was afraid of losing my career,” she said. “Then I was afraid of admitting that fear had helped him.”
Victor overheard.
He offered Laura one last chance. If she declared Noah’s ledger fraudulent and confirmed the notarized transfer, she would remain general counsel after the upcoming sale.
Laura removed her company identification card and placed it beside the scattered money.
“No.”
Victor’s expression became almost peaceful.
He told Owen to detain both women in the drawing room.
Before the guards moved, sirens sounded beyond the gates.
Noah’s teacher had sent police the uploaded video and Jonathan’s recording. The responding officers demanded entry over the intercom.
Victor instructed Owen to tell them the situation involved a family custody dispute.
Laura raised her voice toward the foyer’s external microphone.
“There is forged corporate evidence inside this house. A minor is being pursued by armed private security. I am Laura Bennett, general counsel of Mercer Holdings, and I request immediate police entry.”
Owen shut off the microphone.
But the statement had already transmitted.
Outside, officers obtained emergency authority to breach the gates.
Inside the library, security opened the hidden panel.
