Chapter 08 - The Letter Daniel Never Read

Police secured the mansion and collected both ledgers, the cash, security controls and documents from the safe.

Victor was not arrested immediately.

His attorneys argued that he had lawfully protected company property inside his own residence. They described the lockdown as a security procedure and the cash as a private settlement offer.

The financial evidence required authentication.

Sarah and Noah were allowed to leave.

At a police interview room, Laura opened the envelope addressed to Daniel in the presence of investigators. Jonathan had written it days before his stroke.

He apologized for comparing his sons and rewarding Victor’s aggression as though it were leadership. He admitted that Victor’s first dishonest acts had been hidden to protect the family name.

Each hidden consequence taught Victor that rules were obstacles other people would remove.

Jonathan wrote that Daniel would receive the controlling trust because he understood stewardship. Victor would retain a generous minority share if he accepted independent oversight.

If Victor rejected those terms or attempted fraud, his shares would transfer into an employee trust.

Daniel never saw the letter.

Victor had intercepted it.

The bank records showed that thirty million dollars traveled from the reserve account to Northstar Civic Partners and then into funds controlled by Victor. A handwritten note described the plan to copy Daniel’s digital signature.

There was also an invoice from a private automotive technician dated two days before Daniel’s crash.

The work description read: braking system inspection.

The technician was paid from Northstar.

Police reopened the death investigation.

Sarah held Daniel’s letter against her chest. For four years, the world had called him a thief. She had defended him with nothing except memory and love.

Now paper finally agreed with her.

Noah asked whether his father knew Grandpa trusted him.

Sarah looked at the unopened envelope and felt grief sharpen.

“No,” she said. “But we know.”

Noah lowered his head.

He had imagined the ledger would make everything feel better. Instead, it revealed how close Daniel had come to being believed while alive.

Laura sat across from them.

“I failed him,” she said.

Sarah did not offer immediate forgiveness.

“Then help us finish what he started.”

Laura agreed.

The next morning, she resigned publicly as Mercer general counsel and delivered every private memo she had preserved to investigators.
