The Sale Victor Needed

Chapter 09 - The Sale Victor Needed
Victor had scheduled the sale of Mercer Infrastructure for the following Monday.
The buyer, Helix Capital, intended to divide the company, sell its public-housing contracts and transfer employee pensions into a high-risk investment fund. Victor would receive a private completion bonus worth eighty million dollars.
He needed the sale because Northstar’s accounts were collapsing under hidden debt.
He also needed Noah’s branch of the family to sign away its claim. If Jonathan’s trust became valid, Victor lacked authority to approve the transaction.
The board convened an emergency meeting.
Victor arrived with three attorneys and the forged ledger. Sarah arrived with Noah, Laura and a court-appointed representative for the founder’s trust.
Several directors looked irritated rather than concerned. They had expected the widow of an accused thief to accept the money quietly.
A forensic document examiner presented preliminary findings.
The old ledger’s paper, ink and binding matched materials Jonathan used across forty years. Fingerprints preserved beneath an old repair belonged to Jonathan and Daniel. The transfer page in Victor’s binder had been printed on paper manufactured after Jonathan’s death.
Laura’s notary seal was counterfeit.
Victor claimed an employee had created the false binder without his knowledge.
Then the police played Noah’s recording from the study.
Victor’s voice said Daniel caused his own death by refusing to understand how power worked.
The boardroom became silent.
Victor insisted the remark referred to Daniel’s reckless driving and emotional collapse. He accused Sarah of manipulating a child into recording private conversations.
Noah opened his backpack.
He placed Jonathan’s letter on the table.
“I did not understand most of Grandpa’s book,” he said. “But I understood the part where he said the company was supposed to take care of people.”
One director asked why a child had been brought into a corporate proceeding.
Sarah answered, “Because for four years, this company used his father’s name to justify a lie. He has already been inside this whether any of us wanted it or not.”
The board postponed the sale.
Victor lost the vote by one seat.

It was the first power he had lost since Jonathan’s stroke.
It would not be the last.
