The Founder’s Hidden Room

Chapter 05 - The Founder’s Hidden Room
Noah remembered a story his father once told him.
When Daniel and Victor were children, Jonathan built a hidden reading room behind the library wall. He wanted his sons to have one place in the mansion that belonged to imagination rather than business.
Daniel revealed the entrance to Noah during his final Christmas.
“Count seven compass points,” he had said.
Noah reached the library before security found him. He counted seven brass compass emblems along the lower bookshelf and pressed the seventh.
A narrow panel opened.
Inside, the hidden room smelled of dust, cedar and old paper. A lamp turned on automatically. Child-sized shelves lined the walls. At the center stood a wooden desk containing a model train Daniel had played with decades earlier.
Noah locked the panel from inside.
He placed the ledger on the desk and tried to call his mother. The tablet showed no phone signal, but the classroom app displayed a green upload icon.
He recorded another message.
“My name is Noah Mercer. My uncle locked us in the house because Grandpa’s book says he stole the company.”
Then he noticed a handwritten number inside the ledger’s back cover:
7–3–1. Compass room. Daniel knows.
Noah searched the desk.
The model train’s engine carried three turning wheels marked with numbers. He set them to seven, three and one. A compartment opened beneath the track.
Inside lay a small silver key and an audio cassette labeled for Daniel.
Noah had never used a cassette.
He found an old recorder in a drawer and pressed play.
Jonathan Mercer’s voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, Victor has probably claimed the ledger is false.”
The recording explained that Jonathan discovered unauthorized transfers from the construction reserve. Victor had created the shell company and planned to blame Daniel if questioned.
Jonathan placed copies of bank instructions, trust papers and a letter to prosecutors inside a safe hidden beneath the grandfather clock in his study.
The silver key opened it.
The recording ended with a message for both sons.
“Business can survive losing money. A family cannot survive teaching one child that love means protecting him from consequences.”
Noah sat very still.
Outside the wall, footsteps entered the library.
Owen Pike ordered the guards to tear apart the shelves.

Noah slipped the key into his sock and uploaded the recording through his tablet.
Then the hidden panel began to move.
