Chapter 04 - The House Went Into Lockdown
Mercer House had been designed to impress guests and contain threats.
Steel shutters could descend behind decorative windows. Interior doors locked remotely. Security cameras covered every corridor except Jonathan’s old study, which he had refused to monitor.
Victor activated the system from his phone.
Sarah heard bolts slide into place.
Noah gripped her hand.
Victor said the lockdown protected a valuable family document until company investigators arrived. Laura asked which investigators he had contacted.
He named Mercer Internal Security.
The department reported directly to him.
Sarah lifted her phone to call police. The signal disappeared. A jammer hidden in the security system blocked outside communication.
Victor’s security chief, Owen Pike, entered with two guards.
He instructed Sarah and Noah to surrender the ledger. They would receive a receipt and remain in the guest wing until the matter was resolved.
Laura stepped between them.
“Owen, there is a forged document on this table carrying my stolen seal. If you remove evidence after being informed of that fact, you become part of the crime.”
The guards hesitated.
Owen did not.
He reached for Noah’s backpack.
Noah pulled away. The movement knocked several bundles of cash onto the floor. Banknotes scattered across the polished marble, making the enormous room look suddenly cheap.
Sarah shouted.
Laura grabbed the forged binder while Noah clutched the original against his chest. Owen seized Sarah’s arm, but one of the younger guards released her after seeing the fear on Noah’s face.
Victor ordered the man dismissed.
The distraction gave Noah time to run.
He crossed the foyer and disappeared through a narrow service door beneath the curved staircase. He had noticed it during family photographs Sarah showed him as a child.
Victor shouted for security to follow.
Sarah tried to run after him, but Owen blocked the passage.
Laura looked toward a small ceiling camera above the chandelier.
“Everything you are doing is being recorded.”
Victor smiled.
“Not anymore.”
He had disabled the system.
What he did not know was that Noah’s school tablet remained inside his backpack. Its camera was recording, and an automatic classroom app uploaded short clips whenever it found even a weak network.
The mansion’s public guest Wi-Fi was separate from the security jammer.

At 11:17 a.m., Noah’s teacher received a video showing Victor order guards to take the ledger from a frightened child.
She called the police.
