The Boy With the Real Ledger / Chapter 7 / 19

The Safe Beneath the Clock

Chapter 07 - The Safe Beneath the Clock

Jonathan’s study had remained unchanged since his death.

Victor used it during ceremonial events but avoided working there. The room contained too many reminders of a father who never trusted him completely.

Noah emerged through the passage behind a painting.

The grandfather clock stood between two tall windows.

He found a small keyhole beneath its brass pendulum. The silver key fit.

The entire base released from the floor, revealing a steel safe.

Noah entered the three-number code. Nothing happened.

He tried Daniel’s birthday, his own birthday and the final page number of the ledger.

Footsteps approached.

Then he remembered Jonathan’s recording: business could survive losing money. Family could not survive teaching one child that love meant protecting him from consequences.

The model train code had been 7–3–1.

Noah entered it backward.

1–3–7.

The safe opened.

Inside were bank records, sealed trust certificates, a portable drive and an envelope bearing the name of the county district attorney. A second envelope was addressed to Daniel.

Noah placed everything inside his backpack.

The study door opened.

Victor entered alone.

For several seconds, uncle and nephew stared at each other.

Victor softened his voice. He said security had frightened Sarah by mistake. He promised no one wanted to hurt Noah. If the boy handed over the backpack, they could return to the foyer and solve everything peacefully.

Noah asked whether his father stole the money.

Victor said adults sometimes made mistakes.

“Did you kill him?”

Victor’s face changed.

He stepped forward.

Noah backed against the clock.

Victor said Daniel caused his own death by refusing to understand how power worked. The sentence was not a confession, but it revealed contempt too deep to be grief.

Noah’s tablet continued recording from the backpack’s open pocket.

Victor reached for him.

The study door burst open.

The young guard Victor had dismissed stood there with Sarah and Laura. He had unlocked the drawing room after hearing police breach the front gate.

Sarah crossed the room and placed herself between Victor and her son.

Victor looked at the open safe.

For the first time, he saw the documents Jonathan had preserved against him.

The police entered moments later.

Victor did not run.

He simply stared at Noah’s backpack as though the entire Mercer fortune had become small enough for a child to carry away.
