The Notebook in the Tool Chest

Chapter 02 - The Notebook in the Tool Chest

Noah found the ledger six weeks before the meeting.

Sarah had finally rented a permanent house near the city and begun unpacking boxes stored since Daniel’s death. One wooden tool chest had remained locked because the key disappeared after the crash.

Noah opened it with a paper clip.

Beneath rusted wrenches and his father’s work gloves lay a black leather notebook wrapped in an oil-stained cloth. The cover carried a small brass emblem shaped like a compass.

Noah recognized the symbol.

It appeared above the main entrance of Mercer House and on the old photograph of his grandfather hanging in Sarah’s bedroom.

He carried the notebook to his mother.

Sarah opened it and stopped breathing.

Jonathan Mercer’s handwriting filled the pages. He recorded the company’s earliest loans, private agreements and ownership changes with dates, witness initials and embossed seals. Near the center was a section titled Founder's Continuity Trust.

It granted controlling shares first to Daniel and then to Daniel’s lawful descendants.

Victor received executive authority only while Jonathan was incapacitated. He never received ownership.

A later entry warned that Victor had attempted to alter electronic records. Jonathan wrote that the original ledger and a sealed trust certificate would control if digital documents conflicted.

The final completed page carried a chilling sentence:

If Daniel is accused of stealing the reserve funds, investigate Victor before believing the accusation.

Sarah wanted to take the ledger directly to police.

Her attorney warned that a handwritten book alone might be attacked as fabricated. Victor controlled the company archive, several former trustees and the laboratory that had authenticated the disputed signatures.

They needed supporting evidence.

Noah listened from the hallway.

He understood only parts of the conversation, but he understood that the book was important and that adults were afraid Victor might take it.

The night before they entered Mercer House, Sarah hid the ledger in a locked case beneath her bed.

By morning, it was gone.

She nearly canceled the meeting. Noah stood beside her wearing his blue backpack and insisted they should go.

Inside the mansion, Victor placed stacks of money on the table and opened a clean black binder. He called it Jonathan’s original ledger.

Sarah’s stomach turned.

It looked convincing from a distance.

Then Noah unzipped his backpack.

He had taken the real book because he did not trust the locked case.

More importantly, he had spent the previous evening photographing every page with his school tablet.

The original could be stolen.

The truth had already been copied.
